Go GB!!

Good luck to the British Road teams for this weekend!

With the men tomorrow we have one of the strongest teams in the Olympics … National Champ Ian Stannard, joins Tour de France team Chris Froome, David Millar and Wiggo to hopefully lead out Cav for a win in front of the palace. Lots of VCN members will be on the roadside in London cheering them on…

Then on Sunday we have our own Emma Pooley riding with Lizzie Armistead, Lucy Martin and 2008 gold medallist Nicole Cooke in the women’s event. Emma joined the VCN training ride last Saturday whilst she was in Norwich before heading down to the GB holding camp. Let’s hope a Norfolk ride was the just the setup she needs for Sunday, although her eyes will also be on the time trial in a few days time.

Here’s to what should be a thrilling kick off to the games!… And if you aren’t in London then the TV timings are here.

VC Norwich Summer Road Race- Results

A wet start after a days of rain failed to deter the 35 starters for VCN’s summer road race. Those who chose to stay in bed missed a challenging day in the saddle with only the hardiest 16 (and those lucky enough to avoid the many punctures) making it to the finish. Wayne Crombie (East London Vélo) was a worthy winner. More of Mark Cozen’s photos here.

Emma’s Giro Donne

Our honorary member Emma Pooley scored an impressive second in the Giro Donne, the women’s Giro D’Italia, staking her claim to second on the last of nine stages. 20 days now to the Olympic road race. She took a few minutes to talk to Radio Norfolk about it today and I’m told by colleagues there that she’s very complimentary about a certain East Anglian cycling club.

There’ll be clips from the interview on Radio Norfolk sportsdesks tomorrow morning, space and time permitting as usual. The sports news slots are just after the news headlines at 6.30, 7.30 and 8.30 am.

Boudicca Sportive

The first sportive inNorfolkorganised by the clubs for the clubs was declared a success after an idyllic Sunday in and aroundNorth Norfolk. We closed entries at 400 this year partly to ensure we had enough support to cope – there was a team of 25+ volunteers on the day. Apart from a couple of riders missing signs and a grazed knee the ride was run without incident and was a testament to how the Norfolk clubs can work together – a big thanks to Sara Flatt and Ken Jolliffe for making it happen. VCN were out in force both riding and doing their bit to help run the event (signing, supporting start and finish activities and manning the 70 mile feedstop). The event covered its costs and the profits will go into a fund to support otherNorfolkcycling events over the coming year(s). A full report to follow in the newsletter at the end of June.

Norwich 100

For yet another year VCN had a strong representation at the Norwich 100 and with several groups to choose from there were speed options for all. Here you can see the first of the middle group gathering before riding through to the start in Chapel Close. In all we had over 50 red and black shirts on the road with many taking the opportunity to top up tans at the finish before retiring to the pub to indulge in large quantities of “recovery drink”. For a full report see the link to the June newsletter below, but for those wanting to hear rider comments or see photos drop into the VCN facebook page or go here.
