September Sportive miles
Sportive Trophy: with probably a few miles yet to be claimed for September it’s beginning to look like Chris Loveday is cementing his creditable second place behind the mileage monster that is Jonathan Greenway. Any more mileage claims welcome to newseditor@vcnorwich.co.uk … and while you’re at it, if you feel like scribbling a few cycliing-related lines to share with your club colleagues in the eagerly-awaited October newsletter, then by all means send that as well.
But don’t think the sportive trophy league is all over bar the shouting … you can enter miles for reliabilities, audices and anything else that’s a measured, organised but non-competitive event.
VCN’s season closing TT, on an 11.3mile “Sporting Course” round the well known local Skeets Hill circuit saw an excellent turn out. The inaugural event was blessed with fine weather but a lumpy circuit and nagging wind made for a challenging ride and the benchmarks have been set for next year’s re-run. Thanks also to all those who turned up to support and marshal: another great VCN event.

Final Club TT of the year
And for the final time this year … itʼs a VC Norwich Club TT this coming Sunday. Itʼs
on the Skeets course http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/523739286 with the first
rider off at 1030. Itʼs a course well-suited, maybe better-suited, to road bikes than TT
specials so youʼve no excuse to avoid it. Signing on is by the finish at the top of
Skeets Hill and the start is oppose the Globe Pub in Shotesham. Entry a mere £3 for
an 11.3 mile course.
Now if you donʼt want to ride it please come along and help out or just support your
club mates in their efforts, there being no club ride on the day. If you can help out
please let us know by email to chairman@vcnorwich.co.uk

So far just two claims for July which have pushed Michael Meadows and David Linsdell up the leaderboard. Claims for sportive miles welcome at newseditor@vcnorwich.co.uk – miles are credited for organised, measured, non-competitive rides. The judges are still to meet on whether Jonathan Greenway’s etape ride qualifies.
Horsford TT – 17 July – Results
A bit damp, but a success, chairman Steve Swift writes:
Thanks to all who turned out and made the VCN road races a success on the 6th July, and a special note of thanks to our hosts in Great Cressingham who worked hard to make us welcome in their village and at their summer fete – hopefully this is a model that will grow in 2015 and beyond.
Despite a persistent drizzly rain for the men’s race in the morning the pace of the bunch was high and the bunch animated. There were several attempts to establish a break but the final result was settled in a group sprint up the hill to the finish just outside the fete grounds. Well done to Karl Zimmer who stayed upright to take the win on the greasy roads and commiserations to the two riders who didn’t (thankfully without serious injury).
After the men’s trophy presentation on the fete grounds the afternoon started dryer, but windier. The result was a women’s race where the pace varied widely around the circuit on the opening laps. Like the men’s race earlier the numerous attacks were swiftly neutralised by a hungry bunch. The last couple of laps were run at high speed with the pack consolidating shortly before the final run in to a sprint where Harriet Owen (Matrix Fitness-Vulpine) took the honours.
The day saw a number of firsts for VC Norwich:-
- Our first women’s race run on the same day as the men’s race (with equivalent prize money and trophies)
- A new circuit
- One of the first events in the region run to the newly introduced British Cycling traffic management guidelines
- A combined event run in conjunction with the host village.
There were some sleepless nights beforehand and we have taken some lessons away to improve next time. Thanks again to everyone including the riders who were tolerant and supportive of the teething niggles associated with any new event. Roll on next year – when maybe Helen Wyman may sling a leg over a bike to compete rather than just spectate and when we won’t be fighting for attention against that other pesky race up North!
