Forget Yorkshire – Sunday’s Road Race Action was in Great Cressingham

A bit damp, but a success, chairman Steve Swift writes:

Thanks to all who turned out and made the VCN road races a success on the 6th July, and a special note of thanks to our hosts in Great Cressingham who worked hard to make us welcome in their village and at their summer fete – hopefully this is a model that will grow in 2015 and beyond.

Despite a persistent drizzly rain for the men’s race in the morning the pace of the bunch was high and the bunch animated. There were several attempts to establish a break but the final result was settled in a group sprint up the hill to the finish just outside the fete grounds. Well done to Karl Zimmer who stayed upright to take the win on the greasy roads and commiserations to the two riders who didn’t (thankfully without serious injury).

After the men’s trophy presentation on the fete grounds the afternoon started dryer, but windier. The result was a women’s race where the pace varied widely around the circuit on the opening laps. Like the men’s race earlier the numerous attacks were swiftly neutralised by a hungry bunch. The last couple of laps were run at high speed with the pack consolidating shortly before the final run in to a sprint where Harriet Owen (Matrix Fitness-Vulpine) took the honours.

The day saw a number of firsts for VC Norwich:-

  • Our first women’s race run on the same day as the men’s race (with equivalent prize money and trophies)
  • A new circuit
  • One of the first events in the region run to the newly introduced British Cycling traffic management guidelines
  • A combined event run in conjunction with the host village.

There were some sleepless nights beforehand and we have taken some lessons away to improve next time. Thanks again to everyone including the riders who were tolerant and supportive of the teething niggles associated with any new event. Roll on next year – when maybe Helen Wyman may sling a leg over a bike to compete rather than just spectate and when we won’t be fighting for attention against that other pesky race up North!

NMG Sportive Trophy

Screen shot 2014-06-26 at 23.30.55As the first half of the annual race comes in sight, the top three from last month are still yet to play their cards so there’s been a bit of movement in the table with Michael Meadows leaping up into third spot.

The judges are quite happy to take mileage claims for the first six months of 2014 so if you want to see where you rank, send them off to newseditor@vcnorwich.co.uk for inclusion.

A quick reminder of the rules: events must be organised, paid for and a measured course, but not competitive. Club kit must have been worn. That’s pretty much it. We make the rest up as we go along.

On a perfect Spring evening, 26 riders (where was everyone else?) took the opportunity to participate in our first Club 10 of 2014 at Besthorpe.  Congratulations to Andrew Bean of Wisbech Wheelers (studying at UEA) who won with an amazing 21.53.

Thank you to all the riders who supported this event and, as always, to the many members of VC Norwich who once again gave up their time to promote the TT. (Sean Quarmby, Sally Withey, Ian Doe, Sophie Doe, Matt Gates, Clive Rayner, Nick Kidd, Alan Bond, Desmond Matthews, Christine Stronge, George Stronge, Will Bamber.)

VCN CLUB 10 – this Thursday evening 15th May 2014

The first Club Time Trial is this coming Thursday evening, based at Morley Village Hall. Weather forecast at the moment is looking pretty good.
THE TIME TRIAL  The first rider will be off at 7.00 pm.  There are 40 places on a first come first served basis on the night.  Entry fee is £3   No pre-booking a place, you pay on the night, so don’t email me asking.  The last rider should be finished no later than 8.10 pm.  If you have not done a time trial before, this is a great place to start.
The course comprises two laps between the two roundabouts.  Click on the map for more details.Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 19.33.32
SOCIAL  We have the use of Morley Village Hall for the event.  There will be free coffee, tea and cakes available (although small donations will be appreciated) both before, during and after the event.  So let’s also make it a bit of a club social evening.
MARSHALS  If you are not entering, please volunteer to marshal or help with the event at the start or finish lines.  We don’t need as many as the Open events, but still need a few to make this an enjoyable and safe event for everyone.  Please email Rob Stronge at robstronge@vcnorwich.co.uk if you can assist.
NO CLUB RIDE this Thursday evening from Cringleford Green.
See you all there.
